There is no doubt that nowadays one of the strongest challenges we have as a church is the evangelization of youth.

As a young person, I believe that understanding the sacrament of Baptism is of utmost importance in order to understand the call of Christ in each one of us. In the first place, we must remember that by Baptism we become the children of God. But, have you ever wonder why we become God’s children by Baptism? What is the meaning of becoming a child of God?

In order to understand our Baptism it is necessary for us to remember the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ at the Jordan River. When John baptized Jesus, a voice was heard from heaven that said: “This is my son, my beloved, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). This same voice was present at your own Baptism and will be present every time someone receives Baptism.

God the Father accepts you as a child, and you through Baptism accept God as a father. You may wonder how many children does God have, then? God only has one Son, who is Christ and through Baptism you become part of the Body of Christ, made up by all the baptized. That means that as a part of Christ, you must act like Christ, think like Christ, serve like Christ and help like Christ, so that your actions become truly Christian. Christ lives in you just as you live in him.

We need to understand that the sacrament of Baptism turns you into the young Christ today and you are the one who must respond to the present needs of our society: it will help you to understand that our vocation as baptized people is to be like Christ himself, as the Apostle Paul said: “It is not I who lives, but Christ who lives in me” (Gal. 2:20).

Let us assume our life in Christ and let us work on the building of a civilization of love, as we remember that it is Christ who needs your mouth to preach, your hands to work, and your very life to give witness to love.
