Elections are over, now what? After all the hype and buzz about elections, now we get to wait, but wait actively and ready to hold those we voted for accountable. In our next blog, we will be talking about the numbers and how we did as a community and what those numbers mean for our future. Stay tuned for that in the next few days.
In the meantime, here are some of the things that we can expect to happen next. To start, there has been a power shift in Washington, giving the Republicans the power in the House of Representatives that was held by the Democrats in the past. Republicans also attained additional leverage in the Senate.
Historically, cooperation and commitment from both parties to work on common issues has been a matter of struggle. What this means for us as a community is that we will need to keep working hard and in smart ways to hold those we voted for accountable to their promises. We casted our votes and we have the right to expect elected officials to be responsible to our needs.
There are many lessons to be learned every time an election takes place, especially for a community such as ours. For example, did we come out and vote in big enough numbers to be taken into account? Did our young people vote, or did they continue to not participate in this civic activity? What do you think? Did you vote yourself?
The important thing at this point is to continue with our fight for justice and hope that the new elected officials will respond to our vote with visible and concrete steps towards meeting our needs. We must not sleep on our laurels but continue to work on reaching our dreams and helping those around us reach theirs by working together and engaging politically to enact laws that are fair and just.
What were your impressions of the elections? How do you feel about the outcomes in your state or at the national level? Tell us what you think and share with others your point of view.
I hope that this Election Day gave you the opportunity to experience how important your contributions are, whether through your vote or volunteering, or both, toward shaping this country.
