What is an internship?

I don’t know about you, but I never knew what an internship was until I realized I needed to get one, back in my years of college. Unfortunately I did not know anyone who had an internship or could not find a way to start my search for one.

If you have never had an internship and are wondering what it is and how to look for one, here is a brief explanation of what it is. This is only a brief introduction, but check back in the next week or two for a more detailed listing of Internship opportunities for Hispanic students and some of the requirements or questions that may come up. I will do it in my next blog.

Just as scholarships, federal student aid, and student loans are a vital part in the life of a college student, so are internships.

An internship is a time limited work experience placement. It allows students to explore and gain knowledge and skills in different professional fields. These experiences are meant to offer a genuine work experience to young professionals enhancing their employability and career opportunities.

Internships give you the opportunity to apply the classroom learning to the real world. This experience can also help you determine if you have a genuine interest in a particular professional field, and will help you discover passions for particular work environments and professional areas, making it easier for you to focus on your professional future.

As an intern, you will generally be assigned to a supervisor who will work with you in the day to day activities. It is a great opportunity for you to begin networking, building and maintaining a strong professional network that will be essential for your future as a young professional.

Different internships have different requirements and they are available for college students, high school students and even adult continuing education students. You can inquire in your school regarding the internship opportunities available.

Depending on your career interests, I encourage you to seek internships early on to start building your professional experience.

If you have already had an internship, please share the experience with us as it is valuable information for the people reading this blog. In our next blog, we will have some more concrete information about internships and some places you can visit for options.

Is this information valuable? Is there anything in particular that you would like us to write more about? Your feedback is very important to us, thank you for sharing.
