A close friend of King Henry II of England, Thomas was a multitalented man: he was lively, intelligent and athletic. He also had a deep love for the poor. Thomas was ordained a priest and appointed bishop of Canterbury, a position he did not want, but the king wanted him to assume. The friendship with the king started to turn sour when Henry started asking for more and more money, which Thomas would have to take from the church. When Thomas began refusing to yield to the king’s demands, Henry got furious and decided he needed to get rid of the bishop. The king’s knights murdered Thomas in his own cathedral.
