Damasus was born in Rome and lived during the 4th century. He succeeded Pope Liberius and faced grave difficulties during his papacy, among them Damasus had to defend himself from false accusations regarding his morality.  He asked his priests to live austerely and not to accumulate riches and possessions. He convened the General Council of Constantinople. St. Damasus encouraged the people to love the Scriptures.
