December 3 - Saint Francis Xavier

If we find it hard to travel today, imagine what it might have been in the 16th century. Francis Xavier had absolutely no need to look for trouble. He belonged to a wealthy family and lived in a castle. When he was 18 years old, he went to the University of Paris. He was happy and led a comfortable life. But Ignatius of Loyola was trying to convince him to become a Jesuit. Francis was too much of a fun lover to do that, but eventually he understood the insistence of Ignatius who told him that the whole world would be worth nothing if he lost his soul. Francis then gave himself to Christ and his mission totally and passionately. He traveled to India where his preaching gained thousands of converts to Christianity. He trained many lay people to become evangelizers. He had wished to continue his mission in China, but he died before reaching the country. Together with Therese of Lisieux, he is the patron saint of missions.

What would motivate you to leave behind your comforts and security?
