She was the daughter of French farmers and was named Zoe Labouré. At a young age Zoe knew she wanted to be a nun but she was needed at home, and had to wait until she turned 24. She joined the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, taking the name of Catherine. She had visions of Our Lady of Miracles and told the bishop. Many would come to be devoted to the Miraculous Medal, but no one knew it had been Catherine who had experienced the visions. St. Catherine Labouré remained secluded in the convent serving the elderly and the sick.
