She was a beautiful young woman, the daughter of a wealthy family in Alexandria. She enjoyed studying and when she became a Christian she learned a lot about faith and philosophy. When she was just 18 years old, Emperor Maximinus began persecuting Christians. Gently, but firmly, Catherine exposed her ideas before the 50 philosophers sent by the emperor to convince her to abandon Christianity. Instead they became convinced that she was right. The emperor grew angrier and had Catherine arrested. In jail, the soldiers and 200 guards converted to Christianity. Catherine was tortured, but she remained firm in her faith. She is the patron of philosophers.
