When Albert decided to become a Dominican friar his family was very upset. He belonged to an aristocratic family that wanted Albert to inherit a position of power. Instead, he opted for a life of God and studying, becoming a university professor and writing many treatises. St. Albert the Great is the patron of university students, mostly those in the sciences.
