At an early age in her native Italy, Frances wanted to become a missionary and go to China. But her health was poor and when she asked to be admitted into the convent, she was refused. A priest, who was also her friend, advised Frances to establish an orphanage. She did and soon after more women joined her in this effort, which led to the founding of a new congregation: the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Although Frances continued to dream of going to China someday, she received a message from Pope Leo XIII asking her to go to America instead. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini came to the United States and helped countless Italian immigrants. She founded hospitals, schools, and homes for the elderly. St. Frances died in Chicago in 1917.
