Being hunched over is a symbol of oppression, and such oppression could come from inside (a low self-esteem) or from outside, because of the denial of human rights and dignity. Jesus simply touches the woman and in doing so, he is recognizing her as a person, a human being created and redeemed by God, a daughter of God. The woman stands straight and recuperates her dignity and her health as a human being. As simple as that. To recognize in any person, regardless of her aspect or social and economic conditions is to affirm her condition as a child of God. And such recognition enables the person to stand tall and to praise God.
Is there anyone near you who, because of his or her aspect or condition does not inspire pleasure or trust? Is there someone to whom you can give back humanity simply by recognizing him or her as a child of God?
