Forgiving another person from the heart is an act of liberation. We free that person of the negative bonds existing between us. We say to him or her: “I don't feel resentment because of the hurt”, But there is more. We also liberate ourselves from the role of being the one offended. To the extent that we do not forgive those who have hurt us, we continue to carry the wound within us, or even worse, we carry it as a heavy burden. The great temptation is to hold on to the anger we experienced toward our enemies and define ourselves as the offended party. Forgiveness, therefore, not only frees the other, but also liberates us. It is the pathway to the freedom of the children of God.
