He was a Roman official during the time of Emperor Trajan (3rd century) and was always distinguished for his generosity, even when he had not yet converted. Legend says that Eustace had a vision of Christ where he was honoring the Lord without yet knowing him. Eustace returned home and converted to Christianity. He continued to serve the emperor, however when Trajan asked him to offer a sacrifice to the gods, he refused and was sent along with his family to a lion that miraculously did not harm them. Afterwards they were put into an oven where Eustace and his family were burned to death.
