There are two sides to forgiveness: giving and receiving it. At first sight, giving it might seem the most difficult. We are not capable of offering forgiveness to others when we have not been able to receive it ourselves fully. Only as persons who have been forgiven can we find the inner freedom necessary to forgive. Why is it so difficult to receive forgiveness? It is difficult to say: without your forgiveness I am still bound to what happened between us. Only you can free me. This requires not only confession of having wounded someone but also the humility to recognize that we depend on others. Only when we can receive forgiveness will we be able to give it.
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. – Colossians 3: 13
