From an early age he had two great loves: the church and the poor. He was a humble sacristan of the church and at night he cared for the poor. A merchant from Brussels heard of him and offered Guy a job as an associate so he could have more money to help the poor. Guy had no desire of leaving the church but it seemed like a good idea to get more resources for the poor. However, he later repented having left what he considered his place and vocation.
