August 16 – Saint Stephen of Hungary

Son of the duke of Hungary, Stephen became king when the country was still Pagan. Stephen and other nobles had become Christians and so the king decided to firmly establish the Church in his country, and was accomplishing it, even though the people were violent. Gradually, the country became Christian. Stephen was strong, but he was also kind to the poor. He avoided wars wherever possible and did favors for the poor without them knowing he was king.
