He was a lawyer by the age of 16. He was a brilliant young man, who was interested in a lot of things beyond the law: art, sports, music. His father wanted him to be in the military, but noticed that Alphonsus had artistic talent. He attained great success as a lawyer, but experienced failure one day and realized that the world was extremely deceitful. He decided to dedicate his life to God, who is endless. He preached, wrote, and founded the Redemptorists Congregation.
