James was a fisherman, who together with his brother John, was invited by Jesus to discipleship. They left their nets and followed. Very early in his friendship with Jesus, James was confused and asked the Lord for a place of honor. He later realized that discipleship meant something entirely different. James was the first apostle to be martyred.
