He changed his name from Cesar to Lawrence when he joined the Franciscans at the age of 16. He studied in Padua and learned to speak six languages: Italian, French, German, Greek, Spanish, Syrian, and Hebrew. He possessed great knowledge of the Bible and was a popular preacher. The emperor asked him to convince the German princes to combat the Turks. Lawrence did not succeed but departed with the army. When the Christian soldiers saw how numerous the Turkish army was, they wanted to flee but Lawrence led them carrying only the crucifix. They won the battle.
