May 5 - Saint Edith of Prussia

The daughter of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, she was a princes married to a nobleman. They were happy and had children. When the husband died suddenly and the children were grown up, Edith left everything behind and devoted herself to prayer and to giving hospitality to pilgrims. She said there were three things that help us to get closer to God: suffering, exile in a foreign land, and choosing to be poor. They seem to be such difficult things that they might seem to produce the opposite effect and yet, Edith’s words contain a profound wisdom.

Have you ever experienced having gotten closer to God through an experience of physical suffering or because of your experience of immigration?
