Joseph was the oldest of 18 brothers and studied with his uncle, she was the pastor in a town in France. He attempted to join various orders like the Trappists, the Carthusians and the Cistercians, but was rejected by all the monasteries. In 1770 he went on a pilgrimage to the European sanctuaries and stayed in Rome. He lived inform of the Coliseum praying and gained fame of holiness.
