It seems that Sabas was not too smart, but with his example he brought many people to live according to God.  He was arrested several times during the persecutions against Christians and was released because he was considered insignificant. In one of these arrests, his persecutors were frustrated with his gentleness and joy that they maliciously tortured Sabas and pressed him to eat food that had been sacrificed to the idols. When Sabas refused, he was drowned in a river.
