Celestine was pope during the 5th century and had to battle against various heresies, among them the Arians, who denied the human nature of Christ. He wanted to retreat to the desert, but God called him to the priesthood and to an active life. Celestine was a prolific writer and sent missionaries out to many parts of the world to spread the gospel.
