March 12 - Saint Gregory the Great

He was the son of Saint Sylvia and the nephew of Saints Tarsilla and Emilliana. By the time he was thirty years old, he had the highest civil government position in Rome. But, upon his father’s death, he decided to distribute all his inheritance among the poor and turned his palace into a monastery. He was ordained a deacon and years later, after the death of Pope Pelagius II, he was appointed Pope. His pontificate was a model of government for the church. He healed divisions, restored discipline, helped in the evangelization of the French and Spanish Visigoths. One of his greater contributions was that of the prayers and liturgical song, which is now known as Gregorian.
