Jerome was a soldier and during a troop attack on an enemy country, he was taken prisoner. In the cell he began to consider his life and his true calling to serve God. When he was finally freed, he became a priest and dedicated the rest of his life to the service of the poor, orphans, and youth. He died caring for the sick affected by a plague in 1537.
