When he was 20 years old, his parents died and left a great inheritance to him. They also left him in charge of his younger sister. Anthony felt overwhelmed by the responsibility and turned to prayer. In the course of his meditation, he heard the words, “Go and sell everything you have…” He did sell everything, leaving just enough for support of her sister. On her part, she joined a community of women devoted to prayer. Anthony then became a hermit. He was famous for his good advice and example and many sought his words and encouragement.
