Paul was born in a Christian family in Egypt during the 2nd century. During Decius’ persecution, he took refuge in the desert since his brother-in-law was seeking to turn him in so he could take his money and possessions. Paul devoted his time to prayer and when the persecution ended, he decided to continue his life of prayer and meditation and did not return to the city. He was good friends with another great hermit, Saint Anthony.
