January 2 - Saints Basil and Gregory Nazianzen

They were school friends in Greece in the 4th century. Both came from families of faith. In fact, their parents and siblings are also saints of the Catholic Church. Both friends became priests and were later ordained bishops. Gregory converted many because his preaching was consistent with his life. Some people did not like it, but Gregory remained steadfast in his faith, even if he was always kindly. He has many writings defending the faith. Like Gregory, Basil distinguished himself for his kindness and generosity. He always found time to take care of the poor. He gave away his inheritance to open a soup kitchen where Basil also served food.

How do your friends help you to get closer to God? Do you also help others through your example, kindness, and joy?
